Hip-Hop Grind's Rico Suave got to interview the new youngest artist of Def Jam, rapper "YG". Straight out of Compton, YG has the #1 record in the streets of LA right now and is on a mission to take over every coast. He's confident and has no plans of stopping rite now. Check out what he had to say to Hip-Hop Grind rite here.
Rico Suave: Being a young guy, what made you start rapping?
Young Gangsta: Somebody had dissed me like three years ago. They made a diss and put it on myspace. I heard it so I'm like, I have to get him back so from that day on, I just started rapping. When I was in the 10th grade like three years ago.
RS: If you weren't a rapper, what would you be doing right now?
YG: Probably in the streets, in the streets real tough. I don't even know.
RS: The single "Toot it & Boot it" is out right now, whats the message behind the song?
YG: The message is, hit the club, meet a girl, take her back to the house and have sex with her, then kick her out, toot it and boot it.
RS: Do you feel that you fall into the "Jerk Movement" category or will you continue to rap when the movement dies?
YG: I'm going to continue to rap when the movement dies down. Im not a jerk artist and I never put myself out there to be a jerk artist. But the fans see me as a jerk artist or something, but Im not a jerk artist. I'm not tripping off the whole jerk movement. I'm going to continue to rap.
RS: Did you hear about the beef that the "New Boys" have with "The Pack" and "Chris Brown?" What do you think of the situation?
YG: That's crazy that there beefing with people. That's not even rite, what are they beefing with people for! It's nonsense. Somebody is probably jealous or something, because they just came out and already have beef.
RS: Do you want people to respect you as a rapper or just to like a few of your songs.
YG: A rapper.
RS: How did you sqaure a deal with "Def Jam" thats a huge start to sucess, are you working on an album?
YG: I'm just working right now. Im in the studio working. My album "Fresh on Campus" is coming soon. Im working right now! I've probably made like three songs that I'm going to put on my album.
RS: How did you ink the deal with "Def Jam" though?
YG: They hit my manager. They were checking me out. They came to Club Element one night and seen me perform. They seen me rock it and a week after that they flew me to New York and I had to perform in front of L.A. Reid. Then I came back out here, got a phone call, boom! and then it happened just like that.
RS: Are you looking forward to taking over the New York audience and getting the East Coast love?
YG: I'm not worried about that! I'm about to take over all that, East Coast, South, all that, Europe, I'm going to take over all that.
RS: Who do you feel the best rapper is dead or alive? Who are some of your influences?
YG: To me Lil' Wayne is the best rapper. He goes nuts!,he's crazy. Fab, Drake is viscious, Tupac, Biggie, LL Cool J, like them.
RS: Who would you like to collab with?
YG: Fab, Drake, The Dream, Mya, Lil' Wayne again, Beyonce, Keyshia Cole, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Snoop, Rick Ross, Kanye, Jay Z, I want to collab with everybody.
RS: You have groupies now, are you used to that yet or have you always been used to that?
YG: I've always been used to that. That's nothing to me, I let the homies have fun with that. I just be chilling.
RS: What are you doing when your not rapping or in the studio?
YG: I'm either shopping, or at a tatoo shop getting tatted with the homies, or in the street's messing with females. You can catch me at the clubs.
RS: Do you get nervous when performing?
YG: No I dont get nervous. I get this weird feeling, rite before I perform. I do my thang on the stage though!
RS: Who would you say your fanbase is? hip-hop heads or kids or adults?
YG: Hip-Hop! My momma tells me all of her friends listen to my music, and my homegirls mothers. I got some adults listening to my stuff.
YG: When my album comes out make sure you pick that up! Def Jam, West Coast, I'm going to hold it down. Keep listening to my music and Thank God!
